🌿 Cusco Joins the Great Southern Bioblitz 2025!

Are you in Cusco, Peru? Ever wondered how many wild animals and plants live in your parks, gardens, and natural areas? Are any of them threatened?

From October 24 to 27, 2025, Cusco will be part of the Great Southern Bioblitz 2025 (GSB2025)—a global citizen science event that invites people of all ages to document local biodiversity using iNaturalist.

🐾 Why Participate?

Cusco is a biodiversity hotspot! In 2024 alone, the region recorded:

  • 🔎 1,704 observations

  • 🐸 673 species

  • 🧠 271 identifiers

  • 👥 39 observers

Overall, the Cusco community has made more than 157,000 observations of 10,918 species on iNaturalist—with over 5,300 contributors! This growing community plays a vital role in documenting and protecting the region’s rich biodiversity.

  • 🐦 Rufous-collared Sparrow (Zonotrichia capensis) – 891 records

  • 🌸 Sacred Flower of the Incas (Cantua buxifolia) – 615 records

  • 🐭 Mountain Viscacha (Lagidium viscacia) – 526 records

  • 🦎 Spiny Whorltail Iguana (Stenocercus crassicaudatus) – 525 records

  • 🐦 Chiguanco Thrush (Turdus chiguanco) – 493 records

  • 🐦 Sparkling Violetear (Colibri coruscans) – 473 records

  • 🌵 Eve's Needle Cactus (Austrocylindropuntia subulata) – 461 records
