70 Days to the Great Southern BioBlitz 2025!

The is brought to you by the team from Ferox australis along with our partners across the Southern hemisphere. Including SANBI’s Citizen Science Programme in South Africa, iNaturalist NZ - Mātaki Taiao, naturalistauy, the Naturalista Peru collective and Ciencia Molotov

From 24–27 October 2025, thousands of people across the Southern Hemisphere will step outside to record wild plants, animals, and fungi on iNaturalist. Whether you’re in a city park, your backyard, the bush, or a coastal reef, you can help document biodiversity and power real conservation science.

How to take part

  • Download the iNaturalist app (or create an account on desktop).

  • Make observations between 24–27 October.

  • You’ll have until 10 November 2025 to upload and identify your records.

  • Don’t worry about IDs in the field—just get clear photos or sound recordings.

Southern Africa Spotlight

This isn’t just a survey—it’s a celebration of life as flowers burst into bloom, pollinators buzz with energy, reptiles soak up the sun, and migratory birds sweep through. Since 2020, the GSB has grown from 3,000 observers and 90,000 observations into a true Southern Hemisphere movement. In 2024, 2,048 participants across 45 regions in 16 Southern and Central African countries logged 111,457 observations of 10,735 species, including 654 threatened and 223 invasive species. This year, 52 places—from Angola to Zimbabwe—are gearing up, and we’d love more to join!

“The GSB is a riot of connection—linking people, communities, and science! Last year’s haul was epic, and with BotSoc, NGOs, Scouts, academics, government, and you, we’re set to smash it in 2025—tackling invasives and boosting conservation.” — Suvarna Parbhoo Mohan, SANBI Citizen Science Programme Manager
