75 days to go: 87 projects are already preparing for GSB 2026
The countdown is on! There are now just 75 days until the Great Southern BioBlitz 2026, and preparations are gathering pace across the Southern Hemisphere.
At the time of writing:
🌏 87 local and regional projects have registered
🗺️ 35 countries and territories are represented
🌿 Projects extend across Africa, Australia, Oceania and South America
The observation period will run from 27–30 November 2026, followed by an upload and identification period ending on 14 December 2026.
A growing international community
This year’s registered projects stretch across an extraordinary range of environments—from African savannas, forests and coastal ecosystems to Australian cities, islands of the Pacific and the diverse landscapes of South America.
Participating areas include communities in Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Gabon, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Projects are also preparing across Australia, Fiji, New Caledonia, New Zealand and Samoa, while Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay are among the participating South American countries.
Every project brings its own landscapes, wildlife, people and local knowledge to the global BioBlitz.
Building on an extraordinary 2025 event
During the Great Southern BioBlitz 2025, participants contributed:

These records demonstrated what can be achieved when thousands of people explore their surroundings and share their discoveries through iNaturalist.
With 87 projects already registered for 2026—and more continuing to join—this year’s event promises another remarkable snapshot of Southern Hemisphere biodiversity.
Is your area represented?
There is still time to join.
If a GSB 2026 project has already been created for your area, you can join it through iNaturalist and begin inviting friends, family members, schools, natural-history groups and community organisations to participate.
You can find participating projects through the GSB 2026 global umbrella project.
If your area is not yet represented, you can register a new local or regional project:
Projects can cover a town, municipality, region, protected area, island or another clearly defined geographic area.
Anyone can participate
You do not need to be a scientist or an identification expert to join the Great Southern BioBlitz. You only need a camera or smartphone, an iNaturalist account and some curiosity about the natural world.
During the event, participants can:
Explore a garden, park, reserve, wetland, coastline or other natural area.
Photograph wild plants, animals, fungi and other organisms.
Upload their observations to iNaturalist.
Add their observations to the appropriate local project.
Help identify observations recorded by other participants.
Every observation matters. A familiar garden insect, a flowering roadside plant or a bird seen during a morning walk can all contribute to our shared understanding of biodiversity.
